“Success is about creating benefit for all and enjoying the process. If you focus on this and adopt this definition, success is yours” Kelly Kim.
Forget about how much you earn, whether it’s as low as a dollar an hour or if you are lucky enough to earn $1,000 dollars an hour.
It doesn’t really matter; it’s about how much you can save that’s really important. Are you getting up each and every day and going to work because you have to pay the bills or is it just what you need to do – then stop.
You need to change your attitude right now. You need to have the mentality that you can create something special. Ask yourself are you trying to set yourself up so that one-day you have a choice of retirement options?
Do you want the choice of doing the things you love, rather than the things you must do. If you tell yourself that you can’t run a marathon, then odds are, you probably won’t.
Instead, ask yourself what you need to put in place to give you every chance of successfully completing a marathon, and then just do it!
What is your definition for success?
Remember, I am an accountant, so I have a formula for everything.
Maybe some of the following come to mind when thinking of retirement dreams:
-
-
- making plenty of money,
- being able to buy that beach house or country side cottage you always dreamed off,
- or maybe taking your whole family on that overseas holiday.
-
When it comes to your goals there is no right or wrong, no too big or small, it’s your dream and your life. Success to me is a number of different states of mind; it all about choice, flexibility and freedom. The list of items or dreams that I have created and am working towards will be achieved if success comes my way.
Personally, I like to look at success as the following;
“Being able to do what you want, when you want and with whom you want”.
Let’s break this down a little further.
Being able to do what you want
Ask yourself what am I trying to achieve? Is it travelling overseas or buying that house by the beach? Maybe it’s paying off the mortgage or buying an investment property or two for later on in life.
The key here is that I am working in a manner to allow me to have choices in life, to have the freedom and flexibility of being able to do whatever I consider important at that particular stage in my life. I want to have the flexibility of making decisions around what is important to me at that particular stage.
When you want
When do you want your dreams, goals, and aspirations become reality? Is it at age 50 or age 60 – when are you planning on retirement and what do you need to do to make it become a reality.
If I am successful in creating choices, flexibility and freedom around being able to do what I want, then the next part is being able to do what I want when I want.
Again, I want to have the choice, flexibility or freedom of doing the things I want when I want – not when something else tells me to do it or not when it’s the right time – guess what, there will never be a right time.
With whom you want
When working towards these goals and objectives consider if there is anyone else who will be part of them with you. Maybe your spouse, your children, family or friends.
Part of achieving your goals will definitely include the memories of enjoying them with others whoever that may be. The key here is to get buy in and to communicate your common goals, with the people you want to build these dreams with. If there are two of you working towards a common goal, then you have more chance of making it become a reality.
By creating your success around doing what you want, when you want, then the decision arises whom you want to do it with. There are some things you may choose to do alone, or with your family. Most importantly, success will give you the choice, flexibility and freedom to choose.
The most successful people have some common characteristics around goal setting;
-
- Write down their dreams and goals down,
- Share their dreams and goals with others,
- Regularly review and update their dreams and goals.
Start with these three easy steps and see how quickly you start to build successful habits and results. Then you will be able to define; What Is Your Definition For Success?
