Picture this: something unexpected happens, and your family is left trying to piece together your finances — your home, your super, your accounts, your intentions. Not because anything went wrong but simply because you didn’t have a plan. Suddenly everything is up for grabs. A court steps in. Strangers decide who gets what. And the ATO lay on a hefty death duty, or worse, freeze everything while they sort it out.

It’s more common than you might think. Over 60% of Aussies have no estate plan, assuming there’s always more time. But without an up-to-date Will or clear instructions, decisions can become complicated, time-consuming and, at times, stressful for the people you care about most.

When plans aren’t in place, processes like probate can take months, sometimes longer. Assets may not be distributed as intended, and your family may be left navigating uncertainty during an already emotional time. It’s not about worst-case scenarios, it’s about making things easier for those around you.

Take Action

The good news is that getting organised is simpler than most expect. A well-prepared Will, clear beneficiary nominations and an enduring power of attorney can provide structure and certainty. You sit down with a solicitor, sign the papers, and suddenly your family isn’t guessing. They’re protected. Your super goes where you want. Your dog doesn’t end up in the pound. Your kids don’t turn on each other.

It means your wishes are understood, your affairs are easier to manage, and your family isn’t left guessing.

It’s more than a Will

It’s also worth taking a broader look at your financial position. Are your super accounts consolidated? Are your insurance details current? Is important information easy for your family to access if needed? Small steps now can prevent unnecessary complications later.

Start tonight: grab your phone, log into myGov, find out that overdue return, it’s easier than you think. Pull up your super statements, consolidate them, check the fees, make sure you’re not paying double for nothing. Ring your insurer tomorrow, update the address, add flood cover if you’re in a risk zone. Then book a solicitor. Not next month. This week. A Will, enduring power of attorney, binding nomination for super, done in one go, costs less than a weekend away. Contact us if you need a referral.

You don’t need to be wealthy to benefit from having things in order, you simply need to be prepared. Setting aside a small amount of time to review your arrangements can make a meaningful difference in protecting and supporting your loved ones.

Why now?

Because life doesn’t pause. A mate of mine put it off, thought he was “too young.” Heart attack at forty-two. His wife spent six months proving they were de facto, lost half the house to probate, and the kids still don’t speak. All because he waited.
